The aroma of pumpkin spice lattes and holiday pastries lingering in the air is just one of the hallmarks of the Thanksgiving season. Across the nation millions of families will enjoy a delectable Thanksgiving feast. However, while millions of us are blessed to indulge these holiday traditions, there are countless underserved families that have limited access to food, among other necessities. In fact, a 2014 study by Feeding America revealed that 69 percent of underserved families had to choose between buying food and paying utilities. Uncovering startling statistics such as the one from this Feeding America study, should serve as a reminder to give back this Thanksgiving season to those in need.

Bishop T.D. Jakes and The Potter’s House encourage you to discover the beauty of giving back this holiday. If you’re seeking opportunities to spread cheer to others during Thanksgiving, this list of three practical ways to give back will certainly brighten someone’s holiday season. All that’s required of you is that you give with a servant heart akin to Jesus Christ.

1. Help a Grocery Store Patron

For many underserved families, a trip to the grocery store is often filled with distress. Whether a single-parent household with two children or a two-parent household with five children, providing nutritious, affordable meals can be a daunting task. Families desiring to buy basic food items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, and rice, grapple with the stark reality of choosing between buying food or forgoing a utility payment.

Give Back this Thanksgiving

As we frequent grocery stores, we tend to miss wonderful opportunities to serve. A practical  way to give back this Thanksgiving season is to help a grocery store patron the next time you’re in the checkout lane. The checkout lanes are often brimming with impulse items, from magazines to candy bars. While these impulse items can be tempting to browse through, doing so consumes valuable time that could be spent helping a family standing in front or behind you in the checkout lane.

So, the next time you’re waiting for the cashier to scan your groceries, offer to pay for a family’s groceries. Not only will this delight the heart of the family, this act of kindness will also warm your spirit.

2. Donate an Unwrapped Toy

With Christmas on the horizon, it’s never too early to think about underserved children and how to make their holiday brighter. MegaCARE, the humanitarian arm of The Potter’s House, is currently accepting donations for its annual Toy Drive. Participating in this event is a great way to help put a smile on the face of an underserved child this holiday season. If you’re in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you can donate a new, unwrapped toy and bring it to The Potter’s House main campus for distribution. If you would like to participate in this year’s toy drive and you reside outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you can TEXT to Give. Text T5TD to 28950 to donate today.

The MegaCARE Toy Drive is accepting donations until Sunday, December 3, 2017. When you support the toy drive, your generous gift helps a child from a single parent household of The Potter’s House, the local Dallas community, as well as disadvantaged children in Mexico. Give the “gift of play” this holiday to a child in need.

3. Download the App

Between working full-time, attending school, or tending to a family, among other obligations, you may have noticed that you have more responsibilities than time. However, if you desire to give back during this Thanksgiving season, you can do so and, save time, with our new T.D. Jakes Ministries Giving Experience. When you download the T.D. Jakes Ministries App, you’ll be able to donate to various causes, including rehabilitating formerly incarcerated individuals to assisting with hurricane relief projects, among other efforts.

Additionally, you’ll be able to manage recurring donations, payment information, view donation history, and more. In today’s digital culture, helping underserved communities can happen anytime, anywhere. The T.D. Jakes Ministries App makes it convenient to give back this Thanksgiving.

Although this is not an exhaustive list, we hope that it inspires you to give back to others less fortunate. During this season of giving, remember that we have a lot to be thankful for, from clean drinking water to a pantry replete with food. With these three practical ways to give back this Thanksgiving, Bishop T.D. Jakes and The Potter’s House challenge you to spread this holiday cheer year-round. On behalf of our ministry, we wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving!
