Finances, Man With Wallet Open

Stewardship. What is it and how does it correlate to today’s intercessory prayer focus – finances?  Stewardship is the practice of managing something, including property, business, and finances. It behooves us to exercise prudence in stewarding every resource that God gives us. As any good father would want his children to take care of their belongings, God also desires for us to be great stewards of our finances.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” – Genesis 1:28

Oftentimes, we expect for God to significantly increase our wealth and assets despite our lack of stewardship. If we cannot effectively manage the current resources that we have, how can we expect for God to bless us with even more resources only to have us mismanage them? While God is capable of blessing us with an abundance of capital, if He sees that we’re squandering His wealth, we cannot expect to receive more resources.

As we work toward becoming better stewards of our finances, we must get real about our current financial situations. If we are living above our means to impress others, we will continue to nurture the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck. God wants us to prioritize our needs and understand what those necessities are before we satiate our indulgences.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” – Luke 14:28

In a consumer-driven society, budgeting and saving often take a backseat to overspending. Regardless of our income level, we should exercise the habit of saving more than we consume. However, the former involves a paradigm shift. If we are to be great stewards of our finances, we must save more money than we spend. But, please do not get discouraged, as this is certainly not an overnight process. We believe that breaking the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck and saving more than you spend can be achieved if you are consistent and committed to shifting your mindset and spending habits. As believers, we should desire to be an example to the world of how to steward God’s resources.

Intercessory Prayer for Finances

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you will forgive me of my sins. I believe that you gave your only begotten Son – Jesus Christ – to die for my sins. Today, I accept Jesus Christ into my life. God, I earnestly bow down to you and acknowledge you as my Lord and Savior. I thank you for blessing me with the ability to use my talents and gifts to make a legal, ethical living. God, I thank you for providing the resources that I currently have, including my employment. I know that I must be a great steward of my talents and gifts as well as my income. Father, like so many people, I have struggled with living below my means. There’s so much temptation to impress others with materialistic things. While I know that there’s nothing wrong with owning nice things, I pray that you will bless me to prioritize my needs from my wants. Father, please convict my heart and allow me to practice self-control so that I do not feel tempted to impress others, as I know that my validation can only come from you. God, I know that there’s nothing in this world that can take the place of your inner happiness and joy.

Father, I no longer want to participate in the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck.  Please reveal what I need to do to get my finances in order. Reveal your financial plan to me and my family so that we can prove ourselves as great stewards, according to Proverbs 10:4. God, please expose any “financial mismanagement and/or poverty mindsets” that I or my family have knowingly or unknowingly entertained. If there are any habits that need to be broken, reveal them today. Deliver me and my family from supporting habits that would cause us to live above our means, in Jesus Christ’s name.

“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” – Proverbs 10:4

God, I know that I have been more of a consumer than a saver, with regards to my finances. I ask that you guide me toward invaluable resources, including books and money management groups that will support my saving/budgeting efforts. Lord, please remove anything or anyone from my life that would hinder my goals to save for my future as well as my family’s future, in Jesus Christ’s name. I ask that you will grant me and my family discernment so that we uncover opportunities to save more every day.

Father, I know the plans that you have are to prosper me. I also know that you will not give me more resources than I can handle. I thank you for seeing my life beyond a myopic lens, for you know exactly when and how to bless me with the proper resources. God, I pray that you will convict my heart as well as the hearts of my family members to seek financial counseling if that is needed. Bless us to receive assistance to improve our credit ratings, develop emergency funds, and secure the proper retirement portfolios, among other goals. Father, I pray that you will allow us to not be ashamed to ask for help, as we know that you desire for your children to be great stewards of our finances.

“The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.” – Deuteronomy 28:12

Father, bless me to seek your will in everything that I do. God, please convict my heart to read your Word every day, for I know that you also provide invaluable financial advice for breaking the cycle of living above my means and living paycheck-to-paycheck. Your Word also offers sage advice about budgeting and saving. Lord, I want to be liberated from debt and I know that it will take a paradigm-shift, self-discipline, and patience. I am ready to be a great steward of my finances. I rebuke the enemy’s tactics to keep me in financial bondage, in Jesus Christ’s name. God, I pray that you will break every “financial curse” assigned to my life or my loved ones. May your grace and mercy be upon me as I take practical steps to become a better steward of my finances, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
